Description:

The study was carried out from 1982-1989 at seven located in various parts of Byelorussia. The stations represented different land-use types. The abundance and structure (special, sex, age) of the otter Lutra lutra (Linnaeus, 1758) population and some features of breeding biology (time of birth, female role in reproduction, fecundity) were examined. Mortality of both adult and young animals, together with causes of death, were assessed. The effects of harvest and man-made modifications to areas (mostly transformation of natural waterbodies and the creation of new water reservoirs) on the structure and breeding of otter populations were studied.
