The author looks closely at the beginnings of the magazine against the background of events of the Polish October and attempts to answer the questions about the impact those events had on the possibility to establish the magazine. To look at the genealogy of Więź one should look at the whole milieu of lay Catholics in the latter half of the 1950s, not only at the community of Znak, to which also belonged editorial boards of Tygodnik Powszechny and Znak, Deputies’ Group of Znak and Clubs of Catholic Intellectuals, but also at the milieu of PAX Association gathered around Bolesław Piasecki, which in 1955 was left by a part of editors, including chief editor Tadeusz Mazowiecki. The article presents the ideological position of Więź within Znak, differences between the magazine and the rest of its community, and sheds light on the conflict between Więź and Tygodnik Powszechny in 1960. It also brings up the problem of personalism to which the magazine adverted – especially in the beginnings – referring mainly to Emanuel Mounier and the group he created around a French literary magazine Esprit.}, title={„Więź” i polski Październik}, type={Text}, URL={http://rcin.org.pl/Content/59721/PDF/WA303_78830_B155-Polska-T-11-2013_Czoch.pdf}, keywords={Social conflicts - Poland - 1945-1970, Polish October 1956, Więź (magazine; Poland; 1958-), Poland - politics and governments - 1945-1970}, }
