 abstract={In Poland during the interwar period, over 100 major music schools operated under the Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Education; the vast majority of them private. However, more than one musicologist expressed criticism of the existing music teaching methods, both in music schools and general education institutions. Among the graduates of the Institute of Musicology at the University of Vienna were Zdzisław Jachimecki, Józef Reiss, Melania Grafczyńska, Seweryn Barbag, Józef Koffler, Salomon Kaswiner and Julian Pulikowski, as well as the Ukrainian musicologist Stanisław Ludkiewicz (Stanislav Lyudkevych), active in the Second Polish Republic. Some of these individuals served on the Consultative Commission of the Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Education regarding the structure and curriculum of music schools in 1928–1929. Musicologists identified a number of problems with music education. They pondered the purpose of a music school – not only as an institution educating future virtuosos, but also as a facility serving to develop students’ musicality, and thus society as a whole. They saw a lack of coordination between the practical and theoretical curriculum in music schools as one of the shortcomings. To improve the situation, they frequently drew on the latest achievements in Western European countries, including research in psychology.},
