 abstract={The article is devoted to polemics between Szymon Askenazy and Bronisław Dembiński dating from 1903-1904. The argument was sparked by Askenazy, who questioned the value of the most important part of a publication of primary sources for the origins of the second and third partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth published in 1902 by Dembiński - the part containing documents from Russian archives. Examining Askenazy’s arguments against the edition, the author proves that they do not satisfy the requirements of the methodology of historical research.},
