 abstract={Examination of experimental cages containing mud and fauna from a given habitat, placed on the bottom of a lake, revealed after a few weeks that the number of species and the abundance of benthos had increased several times over, and also the rate of development of the organisms had been hastened in relation to the state found in the neighbourhood of the cages. These differences were not caused by the consumption of the benthos fauna by the large fish or by invertebrate predators, but were probably due to changes in the habitat in the cages caused, among others, by the activity of the benthos.},
