Initially, he worked on the protection ofmonuments in Western Galicia and then on prehistoric archaeology. As a member of the Anthropological Commission of the Academy of Learning in Cracow, he conducted archaeological excavations and was the author of important publications. He applied modern research methods and was well acquainted with European collections and literature on the subject. For many years he was the Curator of the Archaeological Museum of the Academy. From 1905, he taught prehistory at the Jagiellonian University. Eminent Polish archaeologists of the next generation were among his students.
