Problems in biological control of mosquitoes. 1, Larval stages ; Walka biologiczna z komarami

Pages 248-261 ; 24 cm ; Bibliographical references (pages 259-261) ; Abstract in English
Analysis was made of literature on mosquitoes, from the standpoint of prospects for biological control of their larval stages. The possibilities are discussed of utilizing the following phenomena in such control: biocenotic (predation, competition for food, parasitisation), population (density - dependent processes) and habitat phenomena (habitat structure, water management): Attention is drawn to the fact that successful results in control operations have been obtained mainly by means of the direct action on mosquitoes of a factor which has been introduced or modified by men. This is the case in utilization of the predatory activities of fish for reduction of mosquitoes, in introducing parasites or pathogenes of mosquitoes or doing away with mosquito breeding places by draining land. There are also possibillities of making use of indirect action, for instance by introducing nutria into the control of mosquitoes. The influence of these animals consists mainly in intensification of the predatory activities of a large number of aquatic predators in relation to mosquitoes, through conditioning of the environment (rerrnoval of shore-1ine vegetation and prevention of the development of floating vegetation).
