Description:

Muscle segment examination in light and electron microscopy

Subject and Keywords:

Miopathy

Abstract:

A patient with suspected myopathy was examined. A biopsy was taken.Electronmicroscopy analysis revealed, in addition to the muscle fibers of the correct diameter andthe preserved myofibril structure, numerous fibers of very small diameter characterized by thepresence of peripherally located ring-binden structures. In some fibers atrophy of the contractile apparatus and accumulation of abnormal mitochondriawere seen.Mitochondria with blurred structure of mitochondrial cristae or partial lack of them were observed. In some mitochondria cristae formed abnormal structures. Also giant mitochondria, many timeslarger than typical were visible. The location of nuclei was normal, sub-membranous, but in some nuclei rupture of the nuclearmembrane and nuclear damage was observed .
