Abstract:

A28-year-oldpatientwithsuspectedmyotonicdystrophywasexamined.Abiopsyofvastuslateralisdexterwasperformed.Electronmicroscopyanalysisrevealednoultrastructuralchangesinthestructureofthemusclecontractileapparatus.Weobservedmitochondriaofsmalldiameter,elongatedshape anddark,electron-densemitochondrialmatrix.Insomefibers,enlarged,swollenmitochondriawithabrightmatrixwereobserved.Theywerepartiallyorcompletelydevoidofmitochondrialcristae.Insomemitochondriadisruptedoutermembraneandcytoplasmicpenetrationintothemitochondriawereseen.Focalglycogenaccumulationwasvisible.Anenzymaticmitochondrialdefectislikelyinthispatient
