Description:

Muscle segment examination in light and electron microscopy

Subject and Keywords:

Polymyositis

Abstract:

A 82-year-old patient with suspected polymyositis was examined. A biceps biopsy was performed. Electronmicroscopy analysis revealed ultrastructurally unchanged muscle fibers, characterized by preserved sarcomeres structure and normal mitochondria. Atrophied fibers, characterized by smaller diameter, accumulation of cell nuclei, disrupture/atrophy of the contractile apparatus and sometimes containing deposits of lipofuscin were also observed. Some of the fibers also showed abnormalities in the nuclei structure and / or damage to myofibrils. Infiltration of lymphocytes and plasma cells were observed in the endomysium.Microscopic image of the biopsy may suggest a past inflammatory process .
