Description:

Muscle segment examination in light & electron microscopy

Abstract:

Summary A 50-year-old patient with suspected myopathy was examined. A biopsy of quadriceps was performed. Electronmicroscopy analysis revealed numerous droplets of fat within the muscle fibers and the presence of lipofuscin (Fig. 1,2). We observed altered structure of mitochondria, which were often characterized by light mitochondrial matrix and devoid of mitochondrial cristae (Fig 3,4,5). A defect of mitochondrial enzymes was suspected. Biochemical assesment of carnitine palmitoyltransferase is advisable.
