Abstract:

The growth rate of roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), in three research cycles was compared on three sites on the river (Pilica) differing in the degree of water pollution and fish density. No significant differences were observed in the growth determined in independent research cycles on the same sites (Fig. 1).It has been shown that the growth rate is inversely proportional to density. In most polluted water, despite several times lower density the growth rate is lower (Fig. 3). When analysing the shape of the curve, the differentiation of the growth rate in an annual cycle, the winter “decrease” in length of adult generations, was explained by driving out weaker individuals from wintering places (old river-beds, marginal water bodies) to the extreme environment — the river in winter (Fig. 2).The growth rate of roach from the Pilica and the regularities which control it has been compared with results of other authors investigating different types of water (Fig. 3). It has been confirmed that the main factor stimulating the growth of roach is the length of the vegetation period, quality of food and population density.
