Abstract:

The aim of the research was to present the process of naming domestic animals (pets) in Slavic languages,to point out the factors that determine this process, and to show the similarities or differences occurringin urban zoonymy. Urban zoonymic units in 6 Slavic languages were analyzed: Polish, Czech andSlovak (the West Slavic branch) as well as Croatian, Serbian and Slovenian (the South Slavic branch).Special attention was given to the most productive motivational sources for Slavic animal nomenclatureand different ways of derivation. The material for the paper was collected by means of a questionnaireand field research. The synchronic research method was chosen as the most suitable for thesubject, with consideration of the sociolinguistic aspect and the semantic-inspirational method proposedby J. Strutyński.Comparative analysis of the material was performed from three different perspectives: semantic,formal, and sociolinguistic.
