Abstract:The present state of mathematical investigations on the Boltzmann equation is briefly outlined. In particular problems of existence and asymptotics, concerning space homogeneous and global solutions with different boundary conditions, are discussed. The existence of local solutions with external forces and the application of mollifiers are also briefly discussed. The asymptotic expansions resulting from the Boltzmann equation and concerning the bulk and the initial layer solutions are considered. Some of the many still open problems are mentioned.
