Abstract:

The present book is a contextual analysis of a rebellion against forced collectivisation which broke out at the village of Okół near Bałtów in the Kielce region. On 28 August 1953 the village was the stage of a regular battle between local peasants and members of the party and state authorities, functionaries of the Security Service and the Police forces (Citizens’ Militia, MO). The first rebelled against the creation in their village of a cooperative or, in fact, against the delimitation and ploughing with tractors of a large plot of land which was to be farmed jointly by those who acceded to the cooperative. The rebellion resulted in arrests, detentions and lawsuits. An analysis presented in the monograph is not a straightforward presentation of basic facts about the peasants’ rebellion of 1953. The revolt is set in a broad context of collectivisation both in Poland and other Central and Eastern European countries.
