[Collective flax scutching] [An iconographic document]
Date issued/created: Description:The photo depicts a group of women in a big farmyard. They are scutching flax with purpose-made wooden tools – scutches. In the foreground there is a woman heckling flax. Visible in the distance are some wooden farm buildings. According to the photo’s owner, it depicts collective flax scotching performed by women from the village of Wzdół Rządowy, Bodzentyn commune (Kilece district). In the past, country people commonly used linen underwear and bed linens and performed the complete process of dressing of flax themselves. Currently, even if some people cultivate flax, it is then dresses by machines. The photo was taken by its owner in the autumn of 1944 ; autumn 1944, Wzdół Rządowy, com. Bodzentyn ; The photo sent to the contest named “Photography of the Polish village pre-1948” organized in 1983 by the quarterly “Fotografia” (Photography) and the weekly “Nowa Wieś” (New village). Copy of the photo kept at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (former Institute for the History of Material Culture)
