[Wedding guests outside an inn] [An iconographic document]

Date issued/created:

[1930]

Description:

The photo depicts a group made of several dozen people, a newlywed couple and wedding guests, in festive clothes, posing in several rows in front of a building with a signboard saying “Licensed retail sale of alcoholic drinks in sealed containers. Owned by Maciej Sosna”. Older women are wearing regional costumes: dark blouses and skirts with aprons and kerchief on heads. Some men are dressed in uniforms and caps, some in suits and white shirts with bowties. Children are wearing light-coloured clothes. According to the photo’s owner, it was taken in 1930 during a wedding ceremony in front of Maciej Sosna’s inn in Kokoszyce. It was a marriage ceremony of Maria (…) and Jan (…) – a miner residing in Kokoszyce, Pszów commune. From the 1920s until the end of the 1930s there was a custom in the villages of the Rybnik district to organize weddings in country inns ; The photo sent to the contest named “Photography of the Polish village pre-1948” organized in 1983 by the quarterly “Fotografia” (Photography) and the weekly “Nowa Wieś” (New village). Copy of the photo kept at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (former Institute for the History of Material Culture)
