Książka jest jednym z wyników interdyscyplinarnego projektu badawczego pt. „Rozwój zdarzeń, koncepcji i modeli w inżynierii systemów. Przedstawiono w niej procesy kształtowania się analizy systemowej, jako odrębnej dziedziny naukowej, a także kierunki jej rozwoju. Rozważania wskazują na wciąż wzrastającą rolę modelowania matematycznego oraz teorii podejmowania decyzji w strukturach tworzącego się społeczeństwa wiedzy.
