Abstract:

The screening methods used for improvement of industrial strains are presented. Two generalcategories of methods have been distinguished: random screening and rational screening. Majortechniques employed in rational screening are based on the selection of auxotrophic mutants, revertants of non-producers, strains resistant to some factors like toxic analogues of metabolismintermediates, induction and catabolite repression or end-product inhibition, mutants with modified cell wall permeability and microorganisms tolerating some nutrients and precursors ofsecondary metabolites.
