Abstract:

The paper deals with biosafety aspects of handling EFB Class 2 microorganisms in industry. It presents the summary of the results of the collaborative studies taken to determine air and surface contamination levels during GMT laboratory work, the results of studies of contamination by microorganisms around industrial fermenters and during downstream processing and also the safety of four commercial air filters used on exhaust lines of fermenters. Furthermore, ten years of experience with biosafety at Organon was reviewed. In conclusion one can state that biotechnological processes with Class 2 microorganisms can be performed at the same level of safety as work in the laboratory, if Good Microbiological Technique is strictly adhered to and suitable physical containment is applied. This holds also for recombinant DNA organisms of the corresponding risk class.
