Abstract:

Histologicak diagnosis: Encephalopatia progressiva. Autopsy examination of 67-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with H-E, Cresyl violet and Heidenhain method.Specimens from the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spinal cord showed slight flattening in anterior-posterior dimensions (compression changes due to multiple metastatic foci in the spine). In the cervical cord, atrophy of nerve cells was observed in the anterior horns of the cord. In the thoracic and lumbar spinal cords, diffuse cellular atrophy was seen , the remaining nerve cells demonstrated features of fatty degeneration. Activation and proliferation of glial cells was observed. In the meninges, mainly in the lumbar, partly in the thoracic region, inflammatory infiltrates with histiocytic and lymphocytic cells were seen. In the cerebellum, atrophy of Purkinje cells was discovered. Besides, features of congestion and slight atherosclerotic changes in the vessels were observed.
