Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Status lacunaris. Encephalomalacia recens. Arteriosclerosis gradu majoris .Autopsy examination of 80-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with H-E and O.G.Fresh malacia was notice in transversely cut bundles of white matter fibers in the medial part of the brain branches. Among swollen and disintegrating transversely cut nerve fibers single macrophages and petechiae were present. Laterally to Reichert's nucleus, on the left side, a slit-like perivascular lacuna was observed. Remnants of connective tissue, single vessels, macrophages, histiocytes, vessels, lymphocytes and plasma cells were present at its margins. In addition, small perivascular cavities in the striatum were observed. Throughout the central system, vessels maximally filled with blood were seen. In the walls large atherosclerotic lesions of vitreous-fibrous character. Macrophages with hemosiderin were visible in the appendage or Virchow spaces.
