Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Myeloradiculopathia in decurso cachexiae tuberculosae. Gliosis diffusa et oedema cerebri. Autopsy examination of 63-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, cresyl-violet, Heidenhain and Van Gieson's method. In the spinal cord, lesions were found at all sampled specimens. They manifested by tigrolisis and karyolysis of some nerve cells, gliosis, especially of the gray matter, and severe congestion. There have been no perivascular infiltrations and no changes in the vessel walls except for a few vitreous lesions. In myelin staining, there was no myelin in the affected cells, whereas no demyelination was observed in spinal cord sections. The brain specimens showed diffuse gliosis and satelliteosis as well as features of edema and congestion. In the cerebellum, thinning of the granular layer and loss of Purkinje cells was observed. The whole presentation suggests changes due to chronic inflammatory process (peritonitis and tuberculous pleuritis) and nutritional disorders-cachexia.i
