Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Status lacunaris. Oedema et hyperaemia cerebri. Arterio et arteriosclerosis gradu maioris. Autopsy examination of 71-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, Heidenhain and Van Gieson's method.In specimens from the basal nuclei, numerous small post-malacia cavities were observed, without macrophage reaction. The nerve cells were moderately thinned and quite rich in lipofuscin deposits. Also, moderate thinning was present in the cerebral cortex. In the frontal, central and parietal cortex, areas of tissue spongiform changes occupying the entire cortex or segmentally some layers were visible. There was loss of white matter cells adjacent to the cortex in the central area. Focal areas of spongiform changes were observed also in the midbrain and pons. Marked thinning with cell disintegration was present in the granular layer of the cerebellum. There were features of edema and congestion as well as diffuse gliosis throughout the brain, especially in the white matter and marginal layer of the cortex. The soft meninges were thickened with visible single macrophages. The larger caliber arteries had atherosclerotic plaques.
