Abstract:

The graph model for conflicts is presented as a flexible approach for systematically studying real world disputes. Basic definitions underlying the graph model are reviewed and some representative solution concepts arc defined for describing possible human behaviour under conflict. To demonstrate the practical application of the graph model as a negotiation support tool, the modelling and analysis stages arc clearly illustrated using an international trading conflict, which arose over the export of Canadian softwood lumber to the United States. Besides showing representative modelling and analysis results, insights gained by carrying out a formal graph model study arc pointed out.
