Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Encephalomalcia rubra et wtem in mesencephalis.Autopsy examination of 75-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin.In the frontal lobe cortex, circular hemorrhages, perivascular petechiae by diapedesis, foci of decreased staining and tissue thinning often forming reticulated structures were seen. There was pronounced neuronal atrophy and local cellular disorders mostly of the ischemic type. The vascular network was stimulated, the V.R. spaces and interfascicular glia extended, the perivascular tissue relaxed. The midbrain showed numerous vessels filled with leukocyte clots. The brain tissue in sections showed a spongiform character. Laterally to the Sylvian aqueduct, foci of fresh necrosis during leukocytic inflow were seen in the area of the nucleus of the IV and V nerves. The brain as a whole showed features of edema and congestion. The vessels were fibrously altered. In the vessel examined, no embolic material was found.
