Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Haemorrhagia cerebelli.
Autopsy examination of 73-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and van Gieson method. Two large, fresh, non-reactive hemorrhagic foci were visible on the collected specimen. Hemolyzed blood had soaked into and dispersed the brain tissue; several small vessels with disintegrated walls and small clusters of disintegrating leukocytes were visible in the center of the hemorrhage. Nearby vessels showed significant degenerative changes in the form of vitrification of the tunica media. In many arteries, vitreous masses were visible, penetrating under the endothelium and narrowing the vessel lumen, almost to the point of complete vessel occlusion. In other vessels, necrotic wall damage was seen, with leukocytic reaction and abundant erythrocyte passage into the surrounding tissues. Blood transudate was seen around the veins, and proliferation of young capillaries was noted. The granular layer of the cerebellar cortex was fairly well preserved, only at the capillaries the nerve cells were reduced in number. Numerous homogenized forms were visible between Purkinje cells. A profuse accumulation of lipopigment was observed in the neurons of the dentate nucleus.
