Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Oedema cerebri endogenes ?Autopsy examination of 51-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, van Gieson, Holzer and Heidenhain method No tumor was detected in any of the sections. The entire white matter was spongy and dilated, the glial nuclei had an edematous "halo", and the myelin was stained unevenly due to distention of the fiber systems. The vessels had very dilated perivascular spaces, but nowhere were they disrupted. Holzer staining was only weakly positive: only single glial fibers and a slight thickening of the marginal glial membranes were visible. The case gives the impression of "transcellular" edema resulting from extracellular causes: endo- or exointoxication. Atherosclerotic lesions within the vasculature were minor.
