Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Meningoencephalitis purulenta.Autopsy examination of 38-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, van Gieson and Heidenhain method. In the meninges and subdural spaces of the frontal lobe, masses of densely juxtaposed leukocytes with markedly fewer lymphocytes and macrophages were seen. Stasis in meningeal and cerebral vessels was observed. Relatively small infiltrates were seen around the cortical vessels, penetrating along the vessels from the meninges. In the basal nuclei and the pons, these infiltrates were very sparse, mostly consisting of round-cell elements. The small vessels of the cortex were mostly characterized by slight proliferation of endothelial cells, sometimes resulting in closure of their lumen. Cortical nerve cells occasionally showed ischemic changes. White matter around the basal nuclei revealed features of edema.
