Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Oedema cerebri.Autopsy examination of 54-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, Heidenhain and van Gieson method.Microscopic imaging of the slides revealed extensive neuronal cell loss in the cerebral cortex - sometimes with a stratified distribution involving primarily layers III and V. Significant losses were seen in the ammonal cortex and in the dentate nucleus. In addition, numerous images of nerve cell steatosis and other types of cellular disorders - ischemic and chronic were observed. In the cortex, especially in its lower layers, the amount of astroglia was multiplied. Prominently stimulated astrocytes were seen. In the cerebellum, Bergman's glia overgrowth was evident; in the white matter, the amount of glia was multiplied. Large cerebral edema and prominent astrocyte damage in the gray and white matter were observed. The greatest damage was found in the subcortical white matter, cerebellar white matter, and striatum.
