Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Glioblastome multiforme.Autopsy examination of 68-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and van Gieson method. An extremely pleomorphic tumor originating from glial tissue was found. In the central parts it contained numerous necrotic and hemorrhagic foci. In the parts distal to the necrotic lesions, three types of tissue were present: perivascular aggregates, sometimes with astroblastoma-like arrangements; loose structureless aggregates of small, poorly differentiated cells, and occasionally single mast cell astrocytes were seen perivascularly - this part of the tumor resembled the structure of glioma immaturum. The peripheral parts showed accumulations of variously shaped cells, often large hyperchromatic cells, although without clear nuclear conglomerates, and numerous cells with abnormal mitoses, spindle cells and astrocyte-like cells. The tumor transitioned indistinctly into an environment in which tumor cells were shuffled with stimulated glial and with retained neurons.
