Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Encephalomalacia multilocularis. Status lacunaris.Autopsy examination of 62-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, cresyl-violet and van Gieson method. In the periorbital region, temporal region, and in the cortex and white matter of the occipital region, old malacic foci was found in the stage of dissection and proliferation of mesodermal-collagen fibers. The foci contained macrophages with prominent granular protoplasm and 2 types of nuclei: small, round nuclei, typical of connective tissue histiocytes, and large, sometimes lobular nuclei, suggesting an origin from the supporting glia. Proliferation of collagen fibers was evident in the temporal region specimen. Extensive inflammatory symptomatic reactions were observed. There was perivascular disintegration of status lacunaris type in the basal ganglia /thalamus/.
