Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Encephalitis lymphocytaris , gliosa et haemorrhagia veres similiter post griposa.Autopsy examination of 64-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain frozen and paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and cresyl-violet. The inflammatory changes affected mainly the white matter of the hemispheres, then the stem. They consisted of diffuse glial thickening with lymphocytic perivascular infiltration and microglia thickening. In addition, in the midbrain and basal ganglia bloody petechiae were observed near the most inflamed vessels. The lesions were much more intense at the level of the midbrain, significantly smaller in the pons and medulla. The cortex was slightly altered at the border of white matter, neuronophagia was not likely to be observed. No tumor was found in the medulla at the lumbar level. A likely developmental anomaly was observed in this area: a canal located at the periphery of the medulla, with motor neurons spreading around the periphery.
