Subject and Keywords: Abstract:Histological diagnosis:Ecncephalitis lymphocytaria acuta.Autopsy examination of 14-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain frozen sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin.The predominant feature of the case was acute perivascular and pericellular edema in both white and grey matter. Perivascular transudates were seen in the white matter. A distinct edematous "halo" was observed around oligodendrocytes and astrocytes, causing fiber tracts in the white matter to be dispersed. In the cortex, especially the parietal region, spongy thinning of the structure was seen in several places. Medium and small vessels were filled with blood. Around the medium-sized vessels, sparse lymphocytic infiltrates consisting of several to dozens of elements were visible in the walls. The structure of the cerebral cortex and grey nuclei was preserved - individual cells were obliterated with tigrolysis. The meninges showed venous stasis, slight lymphocytic and mesothelial infiltrates. The picture corresponds to very acute, "fulminant" lymphocytic encephalitis, occurring spontaneously or accompanying infectious diseases (most often in the course of influenza epidemics).
