Abstract:
The book presents the history of the National Party (Stronnictwo Narodowe, SN), one of the most important political movements in Poland, just before World War II, during the war, and after the war, in the period of the Polish People’s Republic (Polish acronym: PRL). The analysis is limited to the Polish capital, Warsaw, which for many reasons was a critical point on the political and ideological map. Hence, the central theme of the book is the Warsaw Uprising and its multiple effects. An important thread is the solution to the puzzle in the dorm of preserved to this day mysterious traces in the staircase of the Staszic Palace. The book proves that these are traces of the blood of soldiers of the National Military Organization (Narodowa Organizacja Wojskowa, NOW) fighting here between August 23 and 6/7 September 1944. Hence, their biographies, characteristic of the nationalist generation of the period, occupy a prominent place in the book. Some of them, such as Wiesław Chrzanowski or Witold Kieżun, played important roles in the post-war history of Poland.
