Abstract:

Letters of complaints sent by Polish People’s Republic citizens to the communist authorities in historical research are treated as an important source reflecting the real scale of social problems and necessities. The system of selection of incoming documentation carried out in offices and central institutions could have a significant impact on the whole picture emerging from the archived and remained documentation. The key research problem will be the attempt at confronting raw epistemological archival sources from two central institutions of my choice (i.e the Central Committee of Polish United Worker’s Party and the Council of State Chancellery) with conclusions emerging from general empirical research on post-war care and health awareness. Focusing solely on the health and healthcare problems reported in the letters, I will try to answer the following questions: whether the list of problems reported in letters of complaints had been changing over time; did it coincide with a set of issues that were noticed in internal discussions of Ministry of Health and of the medical community? Did it coincide with the catalog of problems that emerged from the memoires and, if so, to what extent?
