Abstract:

This paper aims at reconstructing the repertoire of rhetorical figures and tropes constituting funeral topics the death of Joseph Stalin. The sources to the reconstruction of this topics are of two kinds. On the one hand, the official messages from the government as relayed by the Polish Film Chronicle is analyzed as far as the visual, semiotic, narrative, and verbal content is concerned. On the other hand, the letters sent by individuals to the Radio Station serve as an object of literary and stylistic inquiry. Besides traditional panegyric figures of speech, the Film Chronicle applies some avant garde narrative techniques such as stream of consciousness. What can be surprising, the official report on Stalin’s death doesn’t seem to differ much in its emotional timbre from a private letter. Similar figures of speech are applied in both visual and textual messages.
