Próbując odpowiedzieć na pytanie czy poziom metabolizmu ryjówek jest rzeczywiście niezwykle wysoki, zmierzono zużycie tlenu u 13 różnych gatunków. Z gatunków europejskich były to: Sorex araneus, S. minutus, Neomys fodiens, Crocidula russula i Suncus etruscus; z afrykańskich-Crocidura bottegi, C. bicolor, C. jouvenetae, C. poensis, C. theresae, C. wimmeri, C. flavescens i C. giffardi.
