Object description:

Photo (scan from slide). In the foreground, the prior of an ascetic monastery (guru) is sitting on a horse. The guru belongs to the school of ascetics …… .., one of the main schools involved in the rituals of Allahabad (the Hindu name of the city of Prayag). The guru is wearing a garland of flowers, and on his head is hair characteristic of this school (kuta?). The horse has an ornate harness with silver bells. The prior of the school participates in the kumbha mela festival which takes place in Allahabad every 12 years (after 6 years, the so-called half-mela). It is the most numerous festival in Northern India, and the uniqueness of Allahabad is that it lies where the Jamuna flows into the Ganges. The prior leads the march of all school members from the headquarters of the camp, located in the center of the festival, to bathing in the place where the waters merge, and this place can be seen precisely by the different colors of the two waters - it is considered particularly successful for bathing during the kumbha mela.
