Object description:

Photo (scan from slide). The photo shows a fragment of the shepherds' wedding ceremony. In the background you can see a young couple in festive clothes and a brahmin priest performing the ceremony. The bride is covered with a shawl and the groom is dressed in a festive manner. For the duration of the ceremony, they are both connected with a 'holy' rope. In the case of Rabari shepherds, the altar is a fire lit by the priest, which the young couple then surrounds. Guests are dressed in festive costumes, women in characteristic long black shawls with red dots. Young women adorned with jewelery to indicate their married status. Men are dressed in an equally festive, traditionally white.
