Abstract:
The presented book combines a traditional edition of the cartographic source with the documentation of the preparations of its digital edition and a source commentary. The full title of the map in Polish is “Mappa topograficzna woyskowa i statystyczna części Wielkopolski, która dziś Departament Poznański składa wydana przez Edwarda Raczyńskiego Posła Poznańskiego i jego kosztem nowo układana w roku 1807–1812” (A topographic and statistical mappa of the part of Greater Poland, which is being assembled today by the Poznań Department, issued by Edward Raczyński, Sejm Deputy of Poznań, and newly arranged at his expense in 1807–1812). It is called, in short, the Gaul/Raczyński map after the cartographer Ernest Gaul and the founder Edward Raczyński. It is a quite typical topographic map from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, prepared in the form of a colour manuscript probably on a scale of 1:125,000, but never completed. What is more, only two sets of black-and-white photocopies have remained to this day (one in the State Archives in Poznań, and one in the Raczyński Library in Poznań), and the original was lost during World War II. The map is worth preparing its edition (both digital and traditional) due to its significance for research on old Greater Poland (Wielkopolska). It constitutes an interesting material providing an entire catalogue of editorial problems of cartographic sources of this type. This book is a direct result of the project “Digital editions of old maps: perspectives and limitations on the example of ‘Topographical, military and statistical map of Greater Poland (1807–1812)’” financed by the National Science Centre (grant no. 2015/17/N/HS3/01267). The project aimed to take a simultaneous look at the editing of cartographic sources from the perspective of cartography and history: it was intended to take into account both cartographic research methods using computer methods and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and the editing of historical sources with its rules and principles regarding the archetype, filiation, family tree and methods of establishing the text. Its essence was the combination and synergy of the cartographer’s and historian’s methodologies in an interdisciplinary approach. The project’s results are (1) a digital edition of a topographic map of Greater Poland from the early nineteenth century, and (2) a reflection on editing cartographic sources in the context of its possibilities and limitations, not only in a digital environment. The book is based on the project’s results, but it is not a monograph, let alone a synthesis of “editorial studies on cartographic sources”. It is the edition of a map with scholarly commentary to it, preceded by a short chapter on map editing.
