Abstract:
This article is devoted to the problem of obedience towards religious and theological authorities in Bohemia in the first half of the fifteenth century. The author demonstrates how difficult it was to apply Hus’s new ecclesiology to religious practice as Hussite theologians were ignored and replaced by the new authority of the Bible, i.e. lex dei. In practice, the debate on the Church engaged both well-trained university men and laypeople who took positions in conciliatory commissions and participated in the production of decrees of the provincial diets that dealt with religious issues. In addition, the article examines the role played in the search for authorities by Prague University, by John Rokycana, the elected archbishop of Prague, and by the Utraquist consistory.
