Abstract:

The Church of the Bohemian Brethren was established in mid-fifteenth century Bohemia and originated directly from the radical branch of the Hussite movement. Before Luther’s attack on indulgences and the outbreak of the sixteenth-century Reformation, the Church of the Bohemian Brethren underwent a significant evolution in its doctrine and religious practice. In particular Bishop Lucas of Prague (d. 1529), one of its leaders and key theologians, put the Church on a path of transformation that made it an important element of the European and Polish Reformation. Adapting to mainline Reformation developments, the Church of the Bohemian Brethren abandoned the norms and rules of its predecessors, a change that is clearly noticed in its approach to social issues. Such a development did not mean a departure from Hussite roots. The Brothers still considered themselves to be the true followers of Jan Hus – that is the people who did not look after mundane welfare but were ready to sacrifice their lives and longed for the salvation of souls. During the 1549 debate in Königsberg they manifested their great respect for Hussite traditions and asked that Jan Hus be treated as one of the leading Church reformers. At the end of the sixteenth century Szymon Teofil Turnowski, superintendent in Greater Poland, was one of the most ardent promotors of Hus and Hussite traditions in the Polish Church of the Bohemian Brethren. A number of direct references to Hussite ecclesiology can be found in ecclesiastical organization, liturgical norms, and everyday religious practice of the Polish Church of the Bohemian Brethren.
