Abstract:

This article discusses the role of the Standing Working Group for Clothing Culture’s role in forming the Comecon countries’ garment industry. The SWG focused on raising aesthetic and quality standards in an attempt to create a competitive model of ‘clothing culture’ in the context of competition with Western markets. The SWG activities also had a propaganda dimension, attempt-ing to illustrate the achievements of the socialist industry. The text includes an analysis of the effectiveness of the group’s activities and its impact on the availability of goods to consumers.
