Title: Anthropology at the Microphone: An Anthropology Podcast

Resource type:

Sound

Institutional creator:

Instytut Archeologii i Etnologii PAN

Description:

The project aims to disseminate contemporary anthropology online and to bring the specificity of ethnographic research to a broad audience. In Poland, anthropology is still stereotypically understood as a discipline concerned primarily with traditional folk culture, rituals, customs, and open-air museums. Another common perception equates anthropology with the exploration and description of distant, “exotic” cultures from various parts of the world. In our podcast, we offer a different perspective on the discipline, presenting anthropology as a vital field of research on contemporary life. We approach it as a science that analyzes the mechanisms of social relations, provides critical reflection on culture, and challenges established, often static descriptions of human societies. Anthropology also emerges here as an important element of decolonial discourse, as well as a field that examines relationships between humans, animals, plants, and other nonhuman entities that, in ontologies different from Western ones, may be understood as persons. The podcast demonstrates that anthropology is a discipline deeply rooted in the social sciences. By focusing on the analysis of social processes at the micro level, it makes it possible to grasp the complexity of phenomena that often escape macro-social perspectives, thereby making a significant contribution to understanding the contemporary world.
