Abstract:

The article is devoted to primary (common) schools organized and maintained in the Polish colonies existing in cities and settlements along the East China Railway. The Polish diaspora, which is small in numbers, managed to establish seven elementary schools between 1908 and 1949. Th ey were located in Harbin (three) and one each in Ashche, Khandaochedz, Hajlar and the settlement of Manchuria. They differed in the degree of organization and the conditions under which they operated. The shrinking Polish community in Manchuria, mainly due to repatriation and the political and economic changes taking place there, made it necessary to close the schools due to lack of funds for their maintenance. As a result, by 1949 only two Harbin institutions remained open: the St. Vincent de Paulo and Dr. Waclaw Lazowski.
