Abstract:
The is review essay discusses the book by Piotr M. Franz entitled Erziehung der Nation. Rechte Bildungsnetzwerke und ihr national-radikales Erbe in Warschau. 1905-1939 (published in 2023). The book comprises eight chapters, an introduction and a conclusion. The research goal declared by the book's author was to describe the educational network of Polish “nationalists”, whom he equates with members of National Democracy (Endecja) and the National Radical Camp (ONR) together with the National-Radical Movement (RN-R). He assumes that ONR and RN-R epitomized the Polish variant of fascism. The book combines a macrohistorical perspective (the history of the Polish national movement) with microhistory (portraying the Zamoyski Gymnasium in Warsaw as the cradle of national radicalism). The article discusses the main theses of the book, confronts them with source texts, and formulates critical and polemical remarks.
