Michel Foucault is considered one of the most influential thinkers of the late 20th century. His original research concepts, focusing primarily on the critique of contemporary social institutions, are often used in educational studies. They mainly concern the mechanisms of power present in schooling and upbringing. However, Polish pedagogical studies do not pay attention to the fact that Foucault’s research also included the history of schooling, upbringing, and pedagogical thoughts. This article shows the place of the history of education in Foucault’s scholarly workshop on the example of the book Discipline and punish. The birth of the prison. Foucault’s references to the history of education and his source studies are analysed. Foreign historical-educational studies using Foucault’s concepts are also presented along with proposals for new areas of research with Polish historians of education in mind.
