Description:

The photo depicts a young married couple with two small children. The man has short cropped hair and is dressed in a jacket similar to an upper part of military uniform. The woman is wearing a festive blouse/dress and has a string of beads around her neck. She is holding a small boy in a bright outfit in her lap; standing on her left there is a girl with her head resting on her mother’s arm. The girl is in a bright dress and has a big dark bow in her hair. The mother is holding an open book in her hands. The photo was taken in a photographic studio. According to the photo's owner, it depicts Jan (...) with his wife Jadwiga, daughter Marynka and son Stach. The children died in the Warsaw Uprising, their graves are on the Powązki Military Cemetery in Warsaw. The parents – Jadwiga (…), daughter of the Silesian Insurgent and Jan (…) – were both soldiers of the Home Army. They both died of natural causes after the liberation. There are also buried at the Powązki Military Cemetery in Warsaw. Before the war they all lived in Czemierniki ; The photo sent to the contest named “Photography of the Polish village pre-1948” organized in 1983 by the quarterly “Fotografia” (Photography) and the weekly “Nowa Wieś” (New village). Copy of the photo kept at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (former Institute for the History of Material Culture)
