Description:

The photo depicts a group of a dozen or so men posing for the camera in a classroom. Some of them are sitting in wooden school benches, some are standing behind them. All are dressed very neatly and elegantly. According to the photo's owner, it depicts the end of the first training season in the Folk High School in Michałówka near Brody (Krzemieniec district) affiliated with Liceum Krzemienieckie [Krzemieniec Secondary School] and organized by the school inspector Juliusz (...) – the greatest, most accomplished activist and education coordinator in the Volhynia countryside. People depicted in the photo, according to numbers (inscribed on the photo), are: headmistress of the Folk High School (1) – Halina (...), headteacher and political science and economy teacher (2) – Kazimierz (...) and students. On the back of the photo there is the following inscription: "Folk University in Michałówka in Volhynia in 1933. Organized by Juljusz (...) school inspector for Krzemieniec Secondary School in 1933” ; 1933, Michałówka, Volhynia (Ukraine) ; The photo sent to the contest named “Photography of the Polish village pre-1948” organized in 1983 by the quarterly “Fotografia” (Photography) and the weekly “Nowa Wieś” (New village). Copy of the photo kept at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (former Institute for the History of Material Culture)
